San Diego Fleet Week has always held a special place in our hearts. As a military family, Jaclyn and I were eager to share our My Hero Dolls with the community at this iconic event. Since May, I’ve been attending Department Head School in Newport, Rhode Island, while Jaclyn juggles a full-time job at MCRD San Diego and caring for our two boys. Despite our busy schedules, I was home for the long weekend and we knew we couldn’t miss the chance to connect with people at Fleet Week.
Before Fleet Week, Jaclyn had hoped to participate in the Air Show, but the high costs and last-minute timing made it impossible. So we grabbed our street vendors license and headed down to Bravo Pier. It may not have been the prime location inside the event gates, but being outside the gates turned out to be a blessing in disguise.
Set against the backdrop of our beautiful city, we met countless tourists and locals who stopped by to chat, share stories, and admire the dolls. To our delight, nearly everyone who stopped by left with a doll, military-affiliated or not. It was heartwarming to see how quickly people connected with the mission behind our My Hero Dolls: bringing families closer together, no matter the distance.
There were so many memorable interactions. One that stood out involved a couple with their two-year-old son. The father was preparing to leave for a few months of military training overseas, and the little boy was completely smitten with one of the My Hero Dolls—he simply wouldn’t let go. Another touching moment came from proud grandparents eager to purchase a doll for their son, a Surface Warfare Officer and Commanding Officer of a San Diego warship about to deploy. Their excitement to bring a piece of connection to his family was palpable.
Throughout the day, we must have spoken with at least 100 people. Everyone who stopped by wanted to know the story behind My Hero. Sharing our journey and mission reminded us why we started this venture: to help families stay connected, no matter the distance.
Fleet Week wasn’t just another event—it was a reaffirmation of the power of kindness and connection. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who stopped by to support us and hear our story. Among the many memorable interactions, there was one that stood out for being a little different. Check out the video below to see how My Hero fostered kindness, friendship, and maybe even a bit of positive friendly nation-building.
